DevaCurl is dedicated to providing your curls with everything they need and nothing they don’t. One of those “don’ts” is silicone. Here’s why we’ve chosen to formulate without silicone.
Silicones are synthetic polymers that are often used in haircare products as an inexpensive way to add shine and provide a coating on the hair to make it feel soft. Silicones sit on top of the hair which can lead to unwanted buildup that can weigh down curls and block necessary moisture.
Shampoo and conditioners made without silicones are better for waves, curls and coils because they will not sit on top of the hair or block moisture from getting to the curl strand. Instead of silicones, we use emollients and conditioning agents to provide the conditioning, detangling, softness, frizz control, definition, and shine curls need. These ingredients also allow curls to receive moisture without heaviness. Find the right cleansers and conditioners for you!
To be sure your hair products are made without silicone, avoid the CONES! Read the ingredient list on the package and beware of ingredients with ‘-cone’ at the end of the name as they are probably a silicone. Examples include: Dimethicone, Amodimethicone, Cyclomethicone. Silicones can also be disguised with "col,” "conol" or "xane" at the end. By switching to silicone free hair products, you can expect to see bouncier, lighter, moisturized curls… and less frizz! Depending on your hair’s condition, it may take time to see the results. A great place to start is with a clarifying cleanser like Buildup Buster to remove product buildup and alternate with the appropriate DevaCurl silicone free shampoo and conditioner for your wave, curl or coil texture.

SLS/SLES Sulfates can strip the hair of its natural oils and since curly hair can dry out quite fast, we’ve chosen to formulate without them.
Silicones are synthetic ingredients made up of hydrogen, oxygen and carbon. They are widely used in hair products to give that feeling of a moisturized slip but in reality, it’s just coating the strands and acting as a filler. Using silicones on a regular basis can cause major buildup weighing down your hair.
Lastly, parabens are a type of preservative that basically help deter bacteria and mold. While parabens allow products to last super long, they can cause curly hair to dry out and frizz.
