They Made MY Curls POP!!!
Came here for one thing and left with another. And I'm happy... I actually LIKE my hair. I've had Deva Cuts at 3 other places before (DC, Rockville, PA), and I just never really care for the shapes I was given and the products used on my hair. I originally booked an appointment for a Twist- Out, but Yasmine, the stylist and owner talked me into a DevaCut. We had a nice consultation; she asked about how I usually wear my hair, the products I use, how long I've been natural, how I heard about the salon, etc. I told her I can't get a successful Wash & Go on my hair, that's why I stopped getting Deva Cuts, and she said it was because the wrong products were being used on my hair (my hair is 4B, low porosity). Yasmine cut/ trimmed my hair, then washed it, gave me a detox treatment, and set it with a product that wasn't DevaCurl. This product made my curls POP. I've NEVER seen my hair so defined. How is it that I've been to all of these different salons for curls and no one knew to tell me this information? I'm still wondering about this! No wonder I never could see "curls"... I and they weren't using products that would penetrate into my hair. I loved the end result and definitely made sure to get TWO bottles of that product that they used in my hair. Thank you, Diaspora Salon.
This salon. The stylist. The atmosphere. The collective positive energy. Look, good people, let me break it down. I've been wearing my hair in puffs and buns, afraid to let my natural hair shine for fear that it wouldn't meet my expectations. That's real. After some encouragement from my daughter, who has the most gorgeous curly hair ever, I decided that I needed to make a change. I've been following brand ambassadors for all of these curly hair lines for years and never gave my own hair a chance. My natural hair wasn't getting any love, and it needed love. I found love at Diaspora Salon. I found this salon online, just scrolling. I went to be website and was kinda blown away by how beautiful and detailed it was. Why didn't I know this salon was in Baltimore?! I have been to a few "natural hair salons" and was never impressed. I did some more research on this salon and the owner and was impressed by what I saw, so I called to schedule an appointment with Yasmine (the owner), and I was able to speak with her in detail about my goals and history. I liked that it wasn't a pretentious event, you know, some places you're not able to "speak with the owner", you have to speak with someone else. No, I was able to speak with her with no problem. The day of my appointment, I thought about cancelling, but then I remembered their policy and decided to just go through with it (48 hours, FYI, which is kinda steep!). Well... I'm glad I went. From the time they opened the door to the time I walked out of the salon it was just a great experience. Yasmine knows her stuff, and gave me tons of information (and samples) on how to keep my hair and curls on point. I was impressed that she knew so much (no more YouTube for me!!). She's trained with the best and the top curly hair lines in the world, and she's Deva Curl certified. I did the Curl Discovery service and discovered that yes, I had curls. Me? Yes! I have curls and I was taught all about them!! A few things I noticed was the close attention to detail in the salon. Nothing, like nothing was out of place, and it was really pretty. The huge amount of live plants, the music (yoga, jazz, Bruno Mars played), the scent and conversation were great additions. What I truly loved was how much information I was given on how to care for my natural/ curly hair. Like, they even emailed me instructions. The product lines they use are all higher end, and Yasmine explained the differences in the products that were used on my hair. I'm still in "wow" mode. I would highly recommend this salon. It was truly a great experience.
I heard about this salon from co- workers, in the community, on-line, everywhere! And I saw a woman in the grocery store with beautiful hair and she said she went to this salon, so I had to look them up. What struck me first was the website. It's visually stunning and very informative. I have been straightening my hair to get it cut since forever, and decided to try the Deva Cut since I don't wear my hair straight. I prepared and detoxed my hair as the website recommended and made my appointment for about 2 weeks later (the woman who does the Deva Cuts, Yasmine gets booked fast). The day of my appointment, I park, ring the bell, and am greeted by Lea, the salon assistant. It was super hot outside, and she offered me water, which I appreciated. A point for the attentiveness already! Next, Yasmine introduced herself and invited me to sit in her chair. She asked me how I would like my hair cut, and we went over some photos I had. She told me what she would do to get the look and I listened and sipped on my water. After I showed her the photos, she started cutting and asked me about my routine, products I use, etc. Before I knew it, the cut was over, and Lea washed my hair. After about 10 minutes I sat back in Yasmine's chair and she set my hair. She used something else in addition to Deva. Then she placed some clips on the top of my head for "root life" and I was under the dryer. I hate the dryer and was under for about 30-35 minutes. When I came out, she sprayed my hair with a product called Glossy and crunched the stiffness out, then used a pick to give it more volume. I absolutely lovvvvvvve my hair. She showed me the products she used and why, and I got what she recommended. I love Deva products, but I don't think that all work for my 4A hair type, so it was refreshing to see a stylist that understood that and could use and mix other products into the equation to give the best results. I get compliments still 2 months after. I give the service, the stylist, the assistant, and the product availability 5 stars. They do really good work. I see why it's so popular!!
Overall...not satisfied with my 1st Deva Cut experience
Prior to my appointment I called and left a message as I was not sure what coloring options I should schedule based on what I was reading on their website. The recording on their message said if you have questions, leave a message explaining and someone would return your call. Unfortunately, I never received a call back. This was my initial impression of the salon, but despite my apprehension, I decided to proceed. Upon arrival, I was politely greeted and quickly seated. Prior to my appointment, I completed the new consultation form on their website, however, when I asked Yasmine if she received it, her response was "we probably got it". This let me know that she had not taken the time to review it which was now my 2nd negative impression. Trying to remain positive, I continued forward. I then went over with Yasmine how I wanted my hair cut and the color I wanted. I even showed her pictures of both. She told me that in order to get the bright color red that I desired I would have to have my hair extracted. I agreed to the additional $65 charge. As she started to cut my hair, she was cutting large amounts at a time, and didn't do any individual cutting to my curls, I also noticed that she never tilted my head in any direction to see how my curls fell. I was faced forward and away from the mirror the entire time, and she was done cutting in less than 10 minutes. I was then sent over to the wash bowl to receive my color. After my hair was dried, she made a few minor cuts. Everyone was saying how great my hair looked and how beautiful my color was which made me really excited for the big reveal. Unfortunately, when she spun the chair around and I saw my hair, I was in shock at how short she cut it. The picture I showed her of the style I wanted clearly showed the hair kissing the shoulders. My hair was cut well above my chin and it was past my shoulders when I arrived. The color was not the vibrant red I showed her in the picture but I wasn't sure if it was the lighting in the salon as it was getting dark outside before they finished and the lighting in the salon seemed rather dim. So I decided to wait and see when I got home but it wasn't any lighter in the brightest of lights. I honestly feel I could have gotten the same thing done at the Hair Cuttery. Several days after my cut and color I started to get sores on my scalp. I don't claim to be an expert so I cannot say if it was a reaction to the chemicals or from improper application. While the sores did clear up after about a week and a half, this too just added to my overall negative experience. So while I found the staff to be pleasant and the salon to be clean and welcoming, I did not find that the services I paid $342.00 were worth it and therefore I will not be going back.
The best of the best
Recently went back for a Deva Cut and a treatment and had a great time! Some of these reviews are brutal, and have never been my experience. I've only had great experiences with this salon and their whole staff (Yasmine, the owner does my hair). Anyway, for all of the times I loved my hair when she did it, this time I really loved it because they used something new to get the product buildup off of my hair (I thought I didn't have any buildup... WRONG) It made a yuge difference, and now I know why my hair hasn't been poppin' lately... Somebody please keep me away from coconut oil... At the end of the service, my hair looked moisturized, defined and fluffy as usual. Slay! Oh how I wish I could take them home to do my hair every morning... FYI the treatment used was the new Melt Into Moisture by Deva Curl.
Expensive But Worth It
I heard about this salon and stylist many times. I usually wear my hair in protective styles, but saw a Deva Curl kit in Sephora and wanted to know how I could get it to look curly, and how I could maintain that look- if I could even achieve it. I decided to go to Yasmine for my Deva Cut specifically because she works primarily on Black, textured hair (her IG is amazing @diasporasalon). I made my appointment online and followed the directions. When I came in, I still had some build up on my hair, so she got rid of that and my hair came out AMAZING. I wish I could post photos on here. I'm going back in 2 week for the pintura highlights. I have gotten shopped on the street because of how my curls bounce and my boyfriend looooves it! I highly recommend this stylist. Her energy is great, and so is the salon. Nice design and all. Go see her!!
The Deva Cut made my hair grow
At first I did not like my deva cut, I felt that it was cut a little to short, I got nice compliments about it. And as others stated I felt like Yasmine was not personable. She was nice but didn't talk to me about my curl pattern and what I should do, basically a consultation like it states they would. However, my hair did grow a lot since the Deva cut. I would like to go back to get a curly cut, but I think the price is just too much to be getting my ends clipped. It's basically the same price for the deva cut.
They Have Options that it My Lifestyle
Excellent job and I'm in love with my curls. I have 4C hair and was looking for shape, but got shape AND great definition. They offer other natural hair services which is great for me because I can't see myself wearing a Wash N Go every day. I want to see what type of twist- out they can give me. I already made my next appointment...
Cream of the Crop
5 deva cuts ever (the other 3 have been at other salons in Maryland and 1 at Deva in NYC), but this one by Yasmine at Diaspora is the best by far. She tried a different product combo on my hair and I tried it at home, and followed her directions and am just very pleased. The experience, customer service, atmosphere, all of it was great. I haven't stopped getting compliments, and that's with ME doing it too. Good job Diaspora Salon.
Read reviews before going to Yasmine
The owner today advised she would not refund my money but would let me come in to fix my hair. At $140 I would never allow her to touch my hair again. I have to say I was excited to spend the money on a great cut. I read the reviews and was unbothered by her being personable. I was impressed but hated doing the application before my visit because I thought the consultation was going to be what I needed. I spoke to Leah way more and she was more helpful than the owner. I took an appoint changebin time expecting my consultation but the conversation had more to do with natural hair in general than my hair. It last as long as the cut and she didn't touch my hair again until it was dry and fluffed it out cut more or it and I was done. Not the type of service I expected for the price. Now to why I was there. I originally made a deva cut appointment but after I finished the prescreening application the women advised I would be getting a curly cut since I do stretch my hair as well as style it curly. Well when I got home and the hair started to move I saw that I got a a- symmetrical 80's hair the back of my hair looks like I have a bawled spot and that one side one person cut the other she cut. One side is longer and the other is short and rounded at the end. It is very noticeable and I have taken many pictures and sent them to her. She was not apologetic just asked why I was sending pictures like she couldn't see the error. She offered no solution until I advised I wanted my money back and that was to come in within 7 days to get it repaired. I explained in and email my prior bad experiences in hair salons and that I would not be returning ever. Gave her a chance to say something remotely feeling bad about the service and the hair but I got you keep sending pictures without saying why. I hate writing reviews on black businesses (which I rarely do) but I would hate for someone else to have this experience. I know the hair will grow back but prior to going to her I got my hair stretched and cut and that stylist charged half the price and was friendly, personable, professional, and would have never been so cold about a service she performed. Think hard before going to Yasmine. The other persons and her assistant seem wonderful.
I found this salon on Yelp and went to their website and saw the Deva Cut. This salon opened me up to the Deva Curl world and I'm in love. I got the cut and pintura highlights and I really feel like the cut works for me. It was different because I'm used to getting my hair flat ironed before a cut, but I like how she tailored the cut for me specifically. The stylist also cut off all of my straight ends, so my curls are officially poppin'! She used Heaven In Hair and Mirror Curls and I got those items plus the Set It Free since it's winter time. I will be back in January for her to check my progress. I'm so excited. Thanks Deva Curl and Diaspora Salon!!
I appreciate this salon and how they cut and service my hair. First, I never considered my hair "curly", some other words come to mind... some not so good words that I heard all of my life about my hair. When she was cutting, she showed me a curl, and it looked exactly like a pen spring. But it's still a curl!!! Being in Diaspora, I really loved the positive atmosphere and the conversation I received about being able to accept my hair. I've been wearing braids and weaves for years, but got tired of it. I just wanted my hair and scalp to BREATHE. Long story short, I followed the directions her assistant gave and I love my new look. The No- Poo has changed the way I look at a shampoo. The other big product she used on my hair wasn't Deva Curl, but I'm glad she has the ability to use other things, things that may work better for my hair, or my curly type, or anybody for that matter. It makes sense, and I will be back for a Wash 'N Go. I had a very good experience!!
My First Deva Cut was AWESOME!!
I called the salon spoke with the owner and made an appointment for a consultation. I was apprehensive because I never cut my hair but I know I needed some shape. I found the salon on this site. I really like the atmosphere and professionalism that was exhibited and talking with the stylist, Yasmine, who's also the owner really put me at ease. I scheduled the cutting appointment for the following week. I was offered water and a magazine at my appointment, which was really nice. She cut my hair first and then washed and conditioned it, then put product in it to mold the curls. I sat under the dryer for about 30 minutes and she did some fluffing and BOOM gave me a mirror and I loved it! I don't wear my hair curly like that, but I really liked the look. I purchased the products she used and recommended and looked on Youtube for more recommendations, and now I have the whole line. I will definitely be back when my hair grows back.
Only person who can touch my hair
Yasmine is amazing!! I first went to her in 2015 because I was tired of my hair and about to chop it all off (...again lol!). Since Ive been going to her my hair has been the best its ever been! I love going to her for cuts, trims and styling because I know what Im going to get and my hair has gotten so kany compliments every time. Shes literally the only one I trust to touch or cut my hair.
I am so late
The salon is beautiful, the atmosphere is beautiful, the owner is beautiful and my hair turned out beautifully. I've had weird curly hair all of my life. I'm biracial and my White mom had no idea what to do with my hair growing up. I've had relaxers, had my hair fall out a few times, and heat damage always seemed like my forever fate. Yasmine gave me the best cut of my life. Her knowledge about curly hair is amazing. I was soaking it up the whole time I was there, even drilling her for answers to my questions while under the dryer. She didn't even blink. She used all Deva and showed me how to maintain the look when I get home. I was visiting from Panama and have no idea how to get these products there but I brought a good amount from the salon so hopefully it'll hold me over until I'm back in the US. I really loved my experience. I wish I could upload a photo. I have huge hair and now it has a shape. Gratitude.
No Customer ser/Not diva cut
Yasmin has zero customer service skills. I made an appointment for a tapered cut and showed her pictures but walked away with a short cut, some awful sticky product in my hair, and one side of my hair significantly shorter. She didn't even use the diva products. I get more annoyed every time I have to style my hair..I spend time trying to make my curls shrink on one side so my hair can look normal. Yasmin spent the entire time talking with her colleague. She never asked me anything about how I plan to style my hair, my hair type, products, tips...nothing. You face away from the mirror so it's difficult to even correct her during the process. I even left with my hair wet as the sticky stuff was taking a lifetime to dry. If you're going for a tapered cut....do not wasted your money here. Go to a barber shop.
Good cut, Meh Style
I met with Yasmine, and she was nice enough, though she wasn't as personable as I would have hoped. I didn't get much instruction, and though the cut was nice, the style wasn't the best. I wanted big defined curls, and due to my hair type, I ended up with pretty ringlets with 0 volume. I wore it for two days before I did it myself and got the volume I wanted, and with the cut, my hair looked much better.
I received a Deva Cut
I received a Deva Cut and was referred by this website. My hair was done in good time and I am pleased with the service. I never thought Deva Curl worked with my hair but I was wrong. It actually worked really well. I'll be back in 3-4 months as referred by the stylist.
I LOVE my hair!!
After having a Deva Cut performed at another salon in Maryland where they screwed up the cut, I made an appointment at this salon and was VERY clear that I wanted just the minimum off. The owner did my hair and I am extremely satisfied. They upgraded my service to include the build-up buster and another treatment and they made my curls SUPER JUICY. Very satisfied with my experience at this salon!!
Superb customer service!
I will definitely go back to Yasmine. She was very detailed and have educated me thoroughly on how to keep my curls flawless and healthy.
First DevaCut- would go again
I am so happy with my cut from Yasmine. She was professional, on time, and gave me great results. The salon was clean and welcoming. I completed the online consultation for the cut and color as well as followed the prep instructions on the website. I arrived with my hair dried naturally and she cut it dry and then washed/conditioned it. She added on a toner to adjust to brassiness from old balayage highlights. She used gel in my hair and sat me under the dryer. I was scared the gel would make it crunchy, but she finished it by diffusing upside down and broke up the cast. I got great results and would come again in a heart beat!
My New Stylist
After trying and loving DevaCurl products, I decided to go a step further and try a Deva cut. I decided to try Yasmine since she is certified at a level 3. The salon is in a quaint part of the city that I feel safe in and the parking is easy and plentiful (you will need to pay a street meter). I am always pleasantly welcomed when I arrive and feel that my hair questions and cut desires are heard and answered perfectly. After my first cut, people NOTICED and constantly asked me about my cut and products. Even over a year and 3 Deva cuts with Jasmine later, I am still often being asked about my hair. The salon mostly markets to an ethnic hair market, but be assured that all hair textured and curls will look great when you leave.
My First Curly Cut
I got a Deva Cut with a Deva Curl hydration treatment and my hair has never felt so soft. Kudos to Diaspora Salon for a job well done. I love the shape. My hair moves!! I will be back in 4-5 months for maintenance!
As others have stated she didn't use Deva products. Really she should stop calling it a Deva Cut. She barely asked any questions about my hair or needs. The cut wasn't that good. I hate that she faced me away from the mirror.
Deva Cut Review
This was the best cut I've ever had. I'm used to getting my hair cut while it's straight, so this was definitely different for me. I'm in love with the method and the Wash and Go. Thanks to Diaspora Salon I am feeling myself!
I Heart My Hair!
I got a curly cut by Yasmine and I loved it. It's my 6th Deva Cut over the years and I really like how she specializes in African American curly hair. She used all Deva on me, but I like that they carry other lines, and have the ability to use what's best for the customer's hair. The salon had an online consultation form, and I filled that out and was contacted the next day, and booked my appointment for the following week. Staff was nice, provided great conversation, the stylist and assistant answered my questions/ concerns and I went home with a few products. I've been traveling to get my hair cut, and I'm glad I can stop now.
Good, not great
I've been using Deva products for a few years now. I love them. I finally went to Yasmin for my first Deva cut. She did a nice job overall. It was just a little shorter than I wanted (oh well, it grows back). The most confusing thing to me was that she didn't use Deva no-poo or conditioner. Paying such an expensive price for a "Deva Cut," I assumed she would use Deva products. It didn't make sense. Whatever she used left my hair feeling greasy (Thankfully it was back to normal after a day or two). So...pleasant stylist, good cut, bad products, and pretty pricey.
Best Salon and Stylist
I had a very good experience at this salon! Yasmin was an excellent professional and I thoroughly enjoyed the service, the conversation, and my new 'do. I will be returning in 3 months for my Deva Cut refresh, yes indeed. I've gotten so many compliments, and she showed me what to do at home. Tip: her schedule books up fast, so be mindful. It took me 6 weeks to get a Saturday appointment, but it was worth it.
Best Haircut I've Ever Had
I found this salon just surfing the web. My appointment was with Yasmine and I really enjoyed the salon experience and especially how she explained everything she was doing, and gave me the mirror so I could see how to do it myself at home. I really love my haircut. I've had such bad experiences at salons before, even for this type of cut, but Yasmine knows Black natural hair, and I'm glad to have found her. And their website had really, really good information too. I wish I could give this salon 10 stars.
