Most of us, if not all of us, have worn our hair straight at some point in our lives. It is the inevitable, ‘we all want what we can’t have’ struggle.
For those of us who were extremely dedicated to the straight-haired cause, we turned to chemical relaxers for curly hair (Keratin treatments, Brazilian Blowouts, Japanese Straightening) or we used an excessive amount of heat on the regular. I have done all of the above to my hair.
My preteen hair was a disaster. It looked like I had dyed the tips of my hair white, that’s how excessive my split ends were. And then I discovered DevaCurl. On a whim, I decided to try the whole curly thing out. I didn’t know it, but I was transitioning.
The process was less than pretty, and extremely frustrating. When the top half of your head is curly and the bottom half is straight, it is just not a good look. Kudos to my friends for actually staying my friends.
I was not alone in my frustrations or struggles, transitioning to natural hair is a lengthy commitment. And in the words of Grasie Mercedes, a blogger and naturalista, “you hit the 6 month mark and just want to give up.”
Yes. Yes. Yes.
