We know you’ve been in quarantine and your salon options were limited. Maybe you need a trim because you feel like your layers have grown out, or maybe you feel like your waves have fallen limp and need a revival. Perhaps you’ve turned to a straightener or curling iron from time to time, desperately looking for a change. Don’t worry, you’re not alone, we feel you. Hot tools give you a new vibe, but they can also be damaging because of the high temps. Extreme heat + curls = heat damage, and we don’t want that.
If you’re tired of scrunching your hair and want a new look but don’t want to use heat – look no further. We’ve got a few methods below on achieving gorgeous heatless waves. It might take you some time to nail down these techniques (time to practice your braiding skills), but you won’t be damaging your hair with heat and you’ll be left with happy, natural waves.
Buns for Days
Living for Maddie’s waves!
Buns are such a simple way to achieve waves, and they also look cute for going out! You can play around with how many buns you create, but space buns are a lewk and we’re here for it.
Step 1: Start off with your hair freshly washed and conditioned and gather your hair supplies! Grab yourself a couple of clips, bobby pins, and your favorite stylers to achieve maximum volume and texture. We recommend Wave Maker and Frizz-Free Volumizing Foam.
Step 2: Gently scrunch your hair using the DevaTowel to remove excess water so your hair is damp. Use your fingers or a wide-toothed comb to run through your hair and remove any tangles.
Step 3: Using your clips, split your hair into 4 sections. Starting with one of the bottom sections, begin twisting your hair – this will naturally start coiling to create a bun. Secure the bun with four bobby pins – one on each side. Just remember, the smaller the bun, the tighter the waves will be. If you’d like to create more than 4 buns, go ahead!
Step 4: Bun and repeat in each quadrant of the hair. Finish off the look with some Flexible Hold Hairspray to hold the style.
Step 5: When you wake up, remove the bobby pins and shake out your waves. If you’d like, add a few sprays of DevaFresh to refresh your waves!
TIP: If you don’t want to wait until the next day to rock your waves, use your DevaFuser on low speed and heat until the buns are fully dry, then shake out for your finished look.
Obsessed with this look:
Braiding your hair before bed is simple and can be done in a few different ways, so pick your favorite braiding style and give it a go! You can even rock the braids for a daytime hairstyle if you like 😉
Step 1: Apply your favorite DevaCurl styling products to soaking wet hair. Using your fingers, evenly distribute Frizz-Free Volumizing Foam or Wave Maker to give your waves added texture and volume once dry.
Step 2: Part hair somewhat unevenly down the middle using your fingers or a wide-toothed comb. By creating an uneven part, your waves will look more natural the next day.
Step 3: Gently scrunch your waves using the DevaTowel to remove excess water so your hair is damp. Use your fingers or a wide-toothed comb to run through your waves, ensuring that your hair is detangled and smooth to achieve perfect waves.
Step 4: Begin the braiding process! We’re going to do a rope braid for loose, beachy waves, but if you’d like tighter waves, you can opt for a standard three-section braid. Starting on one side of your hair, grab a small rectangular section of hair (about 1-2 inches wide, depending on how thick your hair is) from the top of your part.
Step 5: Divide that section in half into two sections. Take the front section and cross it over to the back section, away from your face.
Step 6: Add some more hair to the front section and cross it over to the back. Repeat the process, adding more hair into the front before you criss-cross it over to the back.
Step 7: Repeat this process until you run out of hair to add on that side. This will leave you with two thick sections of hair near your shoulders.
Step 8: Take the back section and twist it towards your face. Take the front section and twist it away from your face. Cross those two sections. Twist, twist, cross. Repeat until you’ve braided that entire side. Then, repeat those steps on the other side.
Step 9: Secure with a satin scrunchie or soft elastic at the bottom. Spritz your hair with Flexible Hold Hairspray to lock in the braid and then head to bed!
Step 10: In the morning, remove the elastic and gently undo the braids. Flip your hair over and shake it out, spending time at the roots to encourage volume. Spritz 1-2 sprays of High Shine into your hands and scrunch through your waves for added shine.
TIP: Make sure that your braid is tight and that your hair is tangle-free while you go – it helps to detangle with your fingers each time you twist.

Though this process takes a long time from start to finish, it promises smooth, shiny, and bouncy waves each time. It’s versatile for all textures and lengths, and will usually result in defined, voluminous waves. It’s the best style for those who don’t feel like braiding their hair and you only need your fingers, a spray bottle, and your favorite styling products!
Step 1: Apply your favorite DevaCurl styling products to soaking wet hair. Evenly distribute Wave Maker to give your waves added texture and volume once dry. We always recommend applying either Light Defining Gel, Ultra Defining Gel, or Arc Angel Gel as your final styler to help lock in moisture, fight frizz, and promote definition.
Step 2: Grab your favorite wide-toothed comb or styling brush to make sure the products are evenly distributed. You want to feel a slip when you run your fingers through – this will ensure frizz-controlled waves once dry.
Step 3: Separate your hair into sections. Starting at the root, begin twisting a small section of hair away from your face with your fingers until you get to the bottom of that section of hair. Coil it around your finger up to the root, then gently unravel the piece. Alternate thickness of your sections and the twist direction for natural waves.
Step 4: After you finger coil each section, gently scrunch with your favorite DevaCurl gel – we recommend Ultra Defining Gel!
Step 5: Once you’re done finger coiling all of your hair, let it air-dry or diffuse on low speed and low heat. After drying, lightly spray some High Shine into your hands and go through your waves to separate some of the finger coils. You can also spray some Flexible Hold Hairspray and shake your waves out! This will add more volume and body to your hair.
TIP: You want wet hair for the finger coiling process to minimize frizz. If your hair starts to dry while you’re finger coiling, spray some water on your waves with your spray bottle!
