Let’s get real about natural hair, and I mean like, really real. No matter where you are in your natural hair journey, sometimes it’s healthy to take a step back, manage your expectations, and look at the, sometimes, harsh reality of what natural hair can be.
My wash days never come out the same!
We would be more concerned if your wash days did come out the same every time. Just like how you don’t wear the same clothes or eat the same food every day, your curls won’t always be the same! You may use the same products and sleep with your hair wrapped up the same way, but there are so many other factors that you may not be aware of that play a part in what your curls will look like that day. Something as small as the weather being two degrees higher or lower than the day before can drastically change your curls appearance. So, imagine how many other things can affect your curls the same way.
Why don’t my curls look like theirs?
It’s easy to go down a wormhole on social media and see people share the best pictures of their curly hair, but it’s time to let you in on a little secret…your favorite influencers’ curls don’t even look like that all the time and we think it’s unfair for you to compare yourself to them. So yes, bookmark that curly picture you love so much and bring it to the salon for inspo, but don’t try to replicate it because it’s impossible. Everyone’s hair is different! Learn to love and embrace what you have, even if it may look different from what you want or what other people tell you your curls should look like.
It’s okay to break “Curl Code”
You didn’t hear it from us, but it’s okay to break the “curly rules” everyone tells you about once in a while…as long as you practice healthy curl habits as well. Go ahead, book a blowout appointment, but make sure you deep condition with a moisturizing mask, like Melt Into Moisture, as well as a strengthening mask, like Deep Sea Repair, to ensure that your curls are hydrated and healthy-looking.
It’s also okay to, you know, not sleep in a satin bonnet or wrap once in a while, because let’s be honest, sometimes you’re just too tired to even bother. Just know that you will most likely have to refresh the next morning with your favorite product or be totally okay with wearing your hair up in a cute messy bun. Not feeling the messy bun vibe? Baseball caps, headbands, or a slicked back look will never go out of style, so don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
Why doesn’t that method or product work for me?
Well, not every product or method works for everyone, and that is okay and sometimes expected. It would be crazy to think that every new product you try in your lifetime is going to magically work for you. Your body does a great job of letting you know that whatever new thing you may be adding to your routine actually may not be the best option for you.
Make sure you listen to yourself and your curls and discontinue use of any product that may not work for you instead of forcing it to work for you. Everyone is different!
What are some things you wish someone would’ve gotten real about with you when it came to curls?
