You might be tempted to dismiss cleansing and conditioning your curls as a necessary, yet oh-so-boring beauty chore, but here’s the truth: Knowing the dos and don’ts of washing and conditioning your curls is the most important part of your routine. To bring out the beauty of your natural hair texture, it’s all about learning the right way to take care of it. And we’ve got all the best tips! Follow this step-by-step super curly hair guide for stunning hair every day.
BEFORE YOU START: Choose the right curly hair products for your natural texture and curl type
It’s a well-known fact that curly hair tends to be drier than other hair types because the texture makes it harder for natural oils from the scalp to make it all the way down to the ends. That’s why super curly hair, which is very tightly coiled, needs the most intense moisture of all hair types. If your natural hair texture is super curly, No-Poo and One Condition Decadence were made just for you. This award-winning duo with a combo of chufa milk and quinoa protein nourishes, strengthens, and moisturizes curls. And you’ll love inhaling the luxe, comforting scent while you work it into your hair in the shower. Still scratching your head about curl types? This story will help you figure out where you are on the curly hair spectrum.
Just like everything in the DevaCurl line, the gentle formulas of No-Poo and One Condition Decadence are 100% sulfate, silicone, and paraben-free. DevaCurl products were created specifically for curly hair types, and give the right amount of moisture for the definition and frizz control you need. Bonus: The cleansers and conditioners are also cruelty-free and vegan!
Step-by-step super curly hair guide: How to cleanse your curls
Forgive the bragging, but we know A LOT about the dos and don’ts of cleansing. We’ve been at this for over 20 years, and sharing key knowledge with curly girls like you never gets old. Learning is also a big part of our process, and we realized that we needed to expand our line to offer products that would give tightly curled hair (super curly, as we like to call it) the moisture it needs. That’s where the Decadence line comes in—it’s made especially for #TeamSuperCurly. Start your routine in the shower with No-Poo Decadence. The sulfate-free, paraben-free and silicone-free formula gently cleanses your delicate curls without robbing them of essential oils. For the best results, resist the urge to rush through the process, and rinse well after cleansing.
Step 1: Applying your cleanser
Massaging is the key to using No-Poo Decadence the right way. Saturate your hair with water then massage the creamy cleanser onto the scalp with your fingertips to cleanse and stimulate. Continue with this motion while you rinse, to remove all of the cleanser from your scalp. To wash the lengths of your curls, just let the water run over them as you massage and rinse. The bottom line: Take it slow!
Step 2: Applying your conditioner
Follow No-Poo Decadence with One Condition Decadence, a rich conditioner that drenches your hair in moisture, making styling and detangling easier. Apply enough One Condition Decadence to cover all of your strands then chill for two to five minutes (shave your legs, exfoliate or whatever) while your curls drink in the ingredients. Then finger-comb your curls to release any tangles or knots. Finger-combing is exactly what you think—just use your fingers as a comb, starting from your scalp and making your way to your ends. Create a little tension while you finger-comb for maximum definition.
Step 3: Rinse with cold water to lock-in shine
Once you’ve covered your curls in conditioner and gotten rid of every last tangle, finish by rinsing with cold water. Why cold water, you ask? Rinsing with a cool water temperature will seal the cuticle of your hair, leaving it smooth with healthy-looking gloss. Totally worth it! Once you’re all rinsed, it’s time to apply your styling products and dry your curls.
