Definition or volume? Many curlies want both and have spent many moments in their natural curl journey finding the right techniques and products to get their desired look. Getting both can be challenging and as all curlies know, not every wash day is the same.
We put together a list of the best techniques and suggested products to help you achieve defined curls every wash day!
Our Best Products for Definition

Techniques for Defined Curly Hair
Scrunching:
We know you’ve heard of this technique before! Scrunching is not new to the curly person but trust us when we say that it will definitely encourage curl definition. One thing to note with scrunching is that it will also cause shrinkage, so if you don’t want to lose much of your length, check out our finger coiling technique.
Step 1: Apply your favorite DevaCurl products onto your soaking wet curls like you normally would. With each product you apply, scrunch it into your curls. You should be ending with one of our gels, we recommend Ultra Defining Gel for strong hold.
Step 2: Use our DevaTowel or DevaTwist to scrunch out any excess water from your hair and then choose how to dry your curls! Diffusing your curls with our DevaFuser will help encourage volume but if you’re aiming for definition, air-drying is the way to go. If you decide to air-dry, try not to touch your curls until they are completely dry to reduce frizz.
Step 3: Grab some Flexible Hold Hairspray and lightly spray it over your curls while they’re still wet. This helps speed up the drying process and also helps enhance definition.
Step 4: Once your curls are completely dry spray some High Shine in your hands to fluff and separate curl clumps for a full, defined look.
Finger Coiling:
You’re going to spend some time in front of the mirror if you choose to use this technique. It’s great for all different hair textures and it’ll provide amazing definition and curl formation.
Step 1: Apply your favorite DevaCurl products onto your soaking wet curls like you normally would. If one of our gels is not usually part of your routine, now is a good time to start.
Step 2: Grab your favorite wide tooth comb or styling brush to run through your hair just to make sure the products are evenly distributed.
Step 3: Wrap small sections of your hair around your index finger from tip to root. Once you get to the root gently unravel the finger coiled piece, let it fall, and gently scrunch. You can also use your brush for this instead of your fingers using the same movements.
Step 4: Once you’ve finished finger coiling you can either let your curls air-dry or use your diffuser on low speed and heat. Once completely dry spray some High Shine in your hands to gently separate the curl clumps and style to your liking.
