If there is one struggle that all curly people know too well, it’s detangling. Whether it’s in the shower, while styling, or on day 3, detangling is never a fun time. Luckily for you, we’ve got some great tips (and products) to help you ease those stubborn knots.
If you’re struggling with wash day tangles, using a pre-poo before you cleanse and condition can be a LIFE SAVER. Pre-pooing provides slip and silkiness to the hair so you can glide through knots with ease. Our favorite pre-poo, Wash Day Wonder, not only provides slip to melt away tangles, but it also leaves curls soft and manageable. How do you use a pre-poo you ask?
- BEFORE cleansing, smooth onto soaking wet curls in sections. Deanna Brown, a senior stylist at our Devachan salon in NYC says, “A lot of curlies and super curlies struggle with tangling at the nape of the neck, so make sure to put a lot of focus there to avoid breakage as that’s where curly hair gets a lot of its length and thickness.”
- Wash out with a sulfate-free cleanser like No-Poo and seal in moisture with One Condition or a deep conditioner.
Make Sure to Finger Detangle
As our stylists always say, using a brush to detangle is a big no-no. Traditional brushes can cause breakage, frizz, and can disrupt the hair’s natural texture. So instead of raking a brush through your curls, try finger detangling with a product that gives slip. If your hair is dry and you’re trying to work through knots with your fingers, spray a bit of No Comb Detangling Spray in first. If you must use a tool, use a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush.
Don’t Forget to Focus on the Nape of Your Neck
Like we previously mentioned, the underneath part of the hair, specifically the nape of the neck, often gets overlooked. Make sure to section out your hair and give some extra love to that area of your curls. That’s the part of the hair that takes the most beating (from scarves, collars, hoodies, etc.) and it’s also the part that most people don’t think about!
If you deal with random tangles throughout the day, our favorite quick fix is to mix some One Condition and water in a spray bottle to throw in your bag for on-the-go use. Just spray onto those stubborn knots and run your fingers through to ease any tangles.
Try Not to Touch
Last but certainly not least, try not to play with or touch your curls throughout the day. Not only can it create frizz, but it also creates unwanted tangles! We know it’s hard but hands off!
