Curl Advice from Devachan Stylist Candace Witherspoon

At DevaCurl, our professional stylists are at the heart and soul of the brand.

Candace Witherspoon joined our Devachan salon in SoHo in January of this year. She quickly became one of our main go-to stylists for expert advice! We sat down with her to pick her brain about all things curls. Take a peek below to see Candace in action and read on to learn her tips for styling curly hair!

What’s your favorite part of being a stylist at Devachan salon?
I would say being a part of a team of specialists who are trying to change how women/men feel about their hair/curls in the most positive way.

Any tips for our readers who are just starting to go natural and unsure how to start?
Start by thinking about how you want to look and feel while being natural. Build confidence for a big chop or small chop. Know that the journey is yours, not others.

How often do you recommend clients come in for a Devacut?
I would say every three to four months. At least three haircuts a year.

What’s your favorite hair tip you share with your clients?
Detangle hair fully with deep conditioner and let it sit for 20 -30 mins. When the hair is fully detangled, deep conditioner works better especially if your hair is super curly.

Another tip is to spray DevaFresh on ends of hair when dry. Flip over, hit with a diffuser for a few minutes on cool air. This adds volume and bounce to hair.

What’s your curl routine? How do you style your own hair?
I’m currently short and blonde and I’m loving it. Because of the color I do a deep conditioning treatment with Deep Sea Repair and Heaven in Hair once a week. After, I style with B’Leave-In and Ultra Defining Gel.

What are your favorite DevaCurl products for each curl type?

Favorite for wavy is Frizz-Free Volumizing Foam, curly is Styling Cream, and super curly is Super Stretch.

Any other curl advice you’d like to share with our blog readers?

I would say just embrace your curl journey and have fun with it. Love whichever texture you have and don’t compare yourself to others because all curl types are beautiful!
