Amazing first appt but got worse every time after
My first appointment with Melissa was a New Client Cut and Tutorial in February of 2016. I can't rave enough of how much I loved that appointment. I learned so much. I had 5 appointments after that, and they each got worse, until the last one in October of 2017. The day after the appointment when I styled it myself, I noticed the mistakes. Melissa missed an entire section of length and did not cut the interior at all. As any curly girl knows, not cutting the interior results in your hair looking like a triangle. I immediately called and emailed, but Melissa was out of town. The day after that, I was getting my hair styled for a wedding (by a different stylist). I told her "I just got a haircut and there are some mistakes, but I'm hoping to get them fixed next week." Stylist said she can't let me leave like that, and then she showed me the back of my hair. So, I asked the stylist if she could make some corrections that would at least get me through until I saw Melissa again, so she did. I went to see Melissa again the following week. She was condescending and tried to blame it on the fact that I got a blowout. "I don't cut hair for straight styles." I told her "no, it's cut wrong when it's curly too" and offered to show her the pics/video I had. She said she didn't want to see them. So, she looked at my hair but couldn't see her mistakes because the other girl already corrected it. I kept explaining to her what was wrong with it before the correction, but she wasn't understanding until I used hair stylist language and told her that she didn't cut the interior at all. She replied "oh, I like a heavy perimeter." Again, not accepting responsibility. First of all, it's not about what she likes, it's my hair. Secondly, I had already been there 5 times before, so she knows I don't like the triangle look. She trimmed a little and then asked me if I was satisfied, again in a way that was condescending and not accepting responsibility. Her face was getting red. We all make mistakes but part of that is acknowledging it. Even as I left, I still don't think she understood how bad my cut was. And refusing to look at the pictures and video confirms she didn't care. I also hesitated to write this review in case she was going through something personal which affected her work. But we all go through things, and we still have to be effective at work. The only reason I gave 2-stars instead of 1-star is because the first appointment was so good. I recommend the new client tutorial. But you can go anywhere and find someone that knows how to cut curly hair. The Devacut is nothing that extraordinary.
Transitioning back to curls
Today was my first appointment with Melissa. Thanks to her, my hair is coming back to life after a decade on straightening it. So happy I found Melissa and happy to fall back in love with my hair.
Amazing Cut and Stylist!
Melissa is passionate about curly hair. She took the time to talk with me about the science behind curly hair as well as why it’s important to treat curly hair differently than straight hair. My curls TRANSFORMED over the 2 hours I spent in her chair. She cut each curl individually while it was dry and then washed it and completely taught me how to cleanse, condition, and style my hair to get it to do what it naturally wants to. She was warm and friendly and made me a cup of hot coffee. Best haircut I’ve ever had. I never thought I’d find a hair stylist I liked - where I left with my hair looking better than it did when I came in. I’ve always left a salon and immediately put my hair up until I could wash it and start over myself. Not anymore. I’ll never go anywhere else and will send all my curly hair friends to Melissa! Such a gem.
Not worth $135
I entered the salon where I had to speak first before I was acknowledged by the receptionist nor was I not offered any beverages which was displayed during my wait. I went to Melissa because she is a certified Deva curl stylist but was disappointed when she didn't use any devacurl products in my hair nor did she talk about them so I don't know what product benefits my hair. When she washed my hair, I didn't get a massage either nor did she use any products to make my scalp feel great. However, it was a good cut. To me, it was a simple cut and wash, not worth $135.
Don't go for Pintura a highlights
I am a return customer, who had a good initial haircut. I scheduled an appointment for Pintura Highlights, but what I got was a lecture about using flatirons and she basically refused to do highlights unless I got a haircut, but both service at full price plus an additional $40 for other color related services, I was unable afford to get highlights. It would have cost twice as much as what I had budgeted. Although, she gave me a nice cut, she let me walk out the salon with my hair standing up all over my head, I was actually pulling out cut peices of hair when I got home. She did not even spritz it or put a little product in it so I could look presentable. Is that to much to ask for $65 plus tip? I don't think so. I definitely didn't get what I went there for and I definitely didn't look like I spent $75 getting my hair done at "salon bellisimo". I personally don't think she should offer Pintura highlights, she should be more forthcoming about additional charges associated with coloring, and there should definitely be a cut and color special. She didn't even try to give me what I wanted.
I love my Deva cut
I went to Melissa to get my very first Deva cut. She was very knowledgeable about my hair texture and my cut gave me a very nice shape and added volume to my hair. I would definitely recommend her.
Very happy with my hair
Melissa did an excellent job with my hair!! This was my first dry cut and it is so much better than getting it cut wet.She did not cut too much off, just what I needed.I have tight curly/coily curls. She did a great job!!
Very knowledgable about curly hair
Melissa is very knowledgable about curly/coily hair!.! She did a great job with my hair!! I am very happy with it !! My first dry cut. So much better than getting heat damage! I will be going to her from now on.
A friend shared Melissa's information with me, and I'm so glad she did! Got my first haircut and tutorial a few weeks ago, and I've had so many compliments on my hair and people asking to touch it (which is a bit awkward). She knows her stuff, and shares it with you step-by-step. I'm taking my daughter to see her soon!
The Best!!! Hands Down!!
I went to Melissa earlier this summer to get my first curly haircut! I was afraid to let anyone touch my hair bc of how long it has been since growing it out. I could not find good enough reviews or work from someone that I felt could do a good job on my hair until I came across a video on YouTube featuring Melissa. I saw her work and was SOLD! I went to the appointment and automatically felt such a positive vibe from her! She's also very knowledgeable of ALL TYPES of natural hair! I showed her a picture of the hair cut I wanted and got exactly that! My hair turned out beautifully and I left the salon satisfied! Which in my experience never happens! I learned so much from her and she's so passionate about natural hair! She's such a sweet heart and we still keep in touch! I will never go to anyone else she is truly the best! :)
Hands Down The BEST!
I have been going to Melissa for a few years now. I can't say enough awesome things about her. She is so passionate about curls. I don't think is anyone like her. I would drive miles just to have her do my hair. She has taught me so much. My curls have never been happier!
I started seeing Melissa just over a year ago & it was the BEST decision I could have made for my curls! She is so passionate about what she does & I have learned so much from her...and I have passed that knowledge on to other curly girls who ask me how I do my hair!! I finally made a huge decision right before the holidays to cut my long curls to just graze my shoulders....I would have NEVER trusted anyone but Melissa to do this!! She is amazing in so many ways and is a curly girl herself. Her love of what she does has to be experienced in person, I can't express it in words. When I go see her and see the previous client leaving I love seeing the smile on their face and they leave her salon with beautiful curls and so much curly girl knowledge to take home with them!
She really is the best
I went to Melissa around labor day last year and have been in love since. Not only did she give me an awesome cut, she taught me how to start loving my hair again. She also taught me about my hair (who knew all this times when stylists said I had thick hair that It was actually thin hair and just a lot of it!?) One of my favorite things about knowing Melissa is the inspirational posts she puts on her Facebook! I will definitely keep coming to see her as long as I can!
