Emanuella Israel, a Chicago native currently based in San Francisco, is the creator of Souls for Eccentricity. Body positive and unapologetic, Souls for Eccentricity is a brand that relishes in the divine beauty of all things natural and comfortable. From side-stepping the idea of "ideal female beauty" to appreciating the simple aesthetic of flora and fauna, this brand is about inclusion and representation—with a touch of magic.

Spotlight on Emanuella

1

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m Emanuella, a visual artist specializing in ink illustration. I’m originally from Chicago, but currently based in San Francisco. I’ve always been an artsy personality—when I was in middle school, I used to draw sharpie designs on wooden #2 pencils and sell them in the lunchroom. You could also say that my entrepreneurial roots were planted at around the same time.

2

What’s your favorite part about being an artist?

I realized that my unique style was something special, and a reflection of the greater contribution my existence can provide to this life. Being an artist allows me the daily challenge of seeing things from multiple perspectives and reminds me constantly of the freedom in fluidity and creativity.

3

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

The inspiration for my art comes from women, nature, and other things I find inherently magical!

4

How has the current state of the world affected your work/art?

As a Black female creator, the current social and political climate has my creative flow on standby. I have to make sure that I am protecting my mental health from the constant barrage of hate towards my people, while at the same time showing up for my full time job working with children and making space in my daily routine to check in on friends and family. Not to mention the pandemic has us all in our own heads more than we would like due to the increased amount of solitude.

What drew you to this collaboration with DevaCurl?

Having something fun and creative to apply my energy toward (especially a project that highlights artists of color and womxn) is right up my alley! For a lot of us smaller, up and coming creators these experiences provide us with the 'Time to Shine' we need to get our name out into the world and show people what we stand for. And as an artist who has naturally kinky curls and portrays a multitude of curly haired women in my portraits, working with DevaCurl seemed like a great fit.

What’s on your wish list this holiday season?

This holiday season I’m wishing for everyone (including myself) to be granted a moment of serenity amidst the chaos, and the clarity to move forward stronger, together.
