No "Deva" about it

Sept 4 2019 - Very nice staff. If you're going for a traditional haircut, you're probably fine. If you're going in for a Curly-Girl Devacut, do NOT go here. Skip to the bottom if you don't want to read the story. I found out they very recently had some staff get Deva-certified and was beyond excited to try a Devacut. I booked a month in advance as I wanted to have my hair cut just before a wedding. The day of the appointment rolls around. I get a phone call at noon from EnviroTrends to find out the person they booked me with quit unexpectedly and they wanted to re-book me. These things happen beyond the control of the salon - this isn't an issue for me. We re-booked me for the following week. I show up to my appointment the following week ... and there is no appointment. One of the staff remembered I was one of the cancelled appointments from the previous week, but whoever took my call forgot to click "Save" in the schedule and the hairstylist had just left for the day. I'm starting to get irritated by this point, but we're all human, these things happen, so I stay professional (if a little curt) and we re-book for the next day as that wedding is coming up fast now. I called the next morning to make extra sure that my appointment is okay. Turns out they didn't book me with a Deva stylist, so they changed my hairdresser over the phone. I arrive for my appointment in the afternoon to discover I've been switched to a third stylist who they assure me is Deva trained. She sits me in my chair, breaks apart all my curls with her fingers (a huge no-no for Devacuts), and proceeds to pull my curls straight out to cut them square to my head. It was a straight-hair cut on dry hair. There was no curl-by-curl cut, there was no curl consultation, nothing Deva about it. Part of my request was that she shape my hair. She trimmed off the ends, then asked me if I was happy with the result. She did almost nothing to my hair and was afraid to cut anything off because the curls would change after she was finished. She was a very very nice person and probably an excellent traditional cutter, but Deva-certified she should not be. Finally, after all the hassle I went through, I was charged full price PLUS a $20 Deva licensing fee. I should have made a fuss, but I just wanted to get away from that place and go home. I cried in the car on the way home, I was so upset with my experience. After washing and styling my hair at home, it turns out I was given the dreaded shelf cut. I will never darken the doors of this establishment again and I'll be buying my Deva products online from Sephora. I've never been so disappointed by a service in my life. For the first time ever, I actually wish I had straighter hair so I could get normal hair cuts like everyone else. Devacuts are supposed to make you love your curly hair more, but this place will not do that for you.
