I developed curly hair later in my life, so I've recently been in search for someone capable of cutting my curly hair. The last year it has transitioned from 2B to 3A/3C. I called About Faces and explained I've never had a curly cut, but I've been following the curly girl method for the past year, and realized I really needed a specific curly cut. Because my current hair stylist kept trying to cut and style my hair with the method of straightening it. They assured me I didn't need to come in for a consult, but could just book a new client cut. So I booked one with Shirin. When I arrived I explained I had already co-washed that morning, and even refrained from any heavy holding products so she could see my natural curl. I also mentioned I rarely used shampoo or cleanser, and only used cold water because my scalp and hair were on the dryer side. I even went into detail that I had gone through the painful elimination process of discovering what product types worked best for my hair. And things like light mousses and creams were best. And things like high hold gels and sprays made my hair stringy and limp. Shirin assured me she was DevaCurl Cut trained, and could meet my needs. I was under the impression I would be getting a dry haircut. And that the process could be anywhere from 1-2hrs. My hair length was past my shoulders, so I was expecting a longer time. But, I was directly sent to the shampoo girl. I asked for cold water and conditioner only. I got warm water, shampoo, and conditioner. My actual cut was what I needed, but instead of encouraging clumping with moisturizing product before drying. She combed in stiff gel based products which straightened my natural curl out, and then tried to "twist waves" back in. Then I was then stuck under drying fans with direct heat blowing down on my hair for 20mins. This of course gave me flat, frizzy, crunchy locs. Which she then tried to comb out, saying I now had a beachy wave look. The entire process was under 45mins. I walked, well more ran out of there in tears. I looked like a drown Llama. With sad limp damp flips at my ends. And hair plastered to my scalp. Once again, a hair professional had tried to essentially straighten out and smooth my hair down. Even after I said I preferred, bigger hair with volume. Even if it meant incurring frizz. So I had to go home, re-rinse my hair. Extra condition and moisturize to compensate for the shampoo, and cold diffuse my hair to get my curls back. The cut itself was what I needed. But I shouldn't have to wash and style my own hair from someone claiming to specialize in curly hair, specifically DevaCuts! It's just very frustrating to pay all that money, and not be able to see an actual completed look. I don't think I will be back, and will search for another DevaCut salon.
