I feel like Gerri have me the same haircut but shorter. I thought she'd layer it and keep the length but she chopped half of it. I wouldn't recommend this place for 3c hair. My hair is still shapeless just shorter
The staff is very knowledgable about how to care for your curls. Today was my first visit and I got a Bounce Back treatment and a cut. The results were perfect. Just what I was looking for!
Planned to go to Planet Curls for a long time. Finally went -- what took us so dang long? The entire experience was great. I had to apply patience as far as the cut getting started, but I've adopted a new policy that people who provide services deserve some graciousness and space. So glad I did! Macy did an incredible and amazing job. Talked me through care of AJ's beautiful hair and how to maximize those gorgeous curls. I recommend this place to anyone with curly hair. My new saying is "Planet Curls is better than all the hype!"
Ive been to this salon before and was cut by a woman that is no longer there. Today I made an appointment with Charlie, the owners son. My hair is thin and I have 3a curls. I came in with tangles on the ends of my hair (common with curly hair). From the moment I sat in the chair to the end of my haircut experience he pulled my hair while trying to untangle my hair with his fingers and one tangle he pulled apart as if tearing paper so breaking my hair. Mind you I'm not tender headed what so ever. I showed him a picture of the cut that I wanted which called for him to give me shorter layers around my crown which he did cut my top layers shorter just not to match the look I wanted. I told him this after the cut he gave me but he said we were gonna have it washed and see how my curls tightened after styling and we would cut from there. I okayed the plan and recieved my wash and style from jayda (very informative and gentle handling). Then sat under the dryer which was ended before completion by Charlie and was told we would use a diffuser to dry the rest. After diffusing my hair he applied some kind of balm (strong grease scented, non deva curl product) to my hair without informing me or explaining to me what he was doing. I had to ask what it was he was putting in my hair which he replied "oh just a hair balm". Then after he volumized my hair out with this balm (pulling my hair as he squished the curls tight) he stated that my hair looked great as in suggesting we were finished. I then told him I wanted more volume up top so short top layers. He cut around my crown a bit shorter by pulling my hair towards my face quite hard and cutting a very short amount. Finally it was enough for me to be somewhat satisfied. So I told him we were done. I tipped $5 and regretted it after leaving becuase my scalp was throbbing from how tough he handled my hair. Needless to say I will definitely be looking for another deva curl salon for my future hair care.
Got my haircut from Charlie. I told him that I wanted a trim and some work on the shape. He cut my hair for about five minutes without saying anything, and remarked that it would be washed and then he would come back to see if anything else needed to be done. When I went to get my hair washed, a lady (Jada?) asked if I had been there before and proceeded on the canned speech about how to take care of curly hair and showed me what to do which was fine and I appreciated it. Then she pinned up some hair and then put me under a dryer for a while. She asked me how I part my hair and said, "In the middle?" and she laughed and said, "I love the middle, nobody does that anymore." Someone came to check on me after some time and then the same woman took the pins out and I felt like my hair was sticking up unevenly. She then walked me over to Charlie who finally made a bit of small talk and looked at it and said, "It came out great, I'm really happy with it!" without asking me how I felt and walked away. When I went to pay, I was expecting to be able to purchase some of the products that were used on my hair as I had forgotten some names, but the receptionist just rang me up, making no effort to sell me anything, so I did not ask.....Nobody once asked how I liked the cut....I will not be returning.
Gerri cuts my hair to maximize my curls every time. Always a great cut.
I'm so glad we found out about Planet Curls! I've taken my curly-haired 4yr old twice & both times were an awesome experience. They REALLY know how to cut curly hair!! Thank y'all for teaching me how to care for my lil' diva's curls. :)
I had my first haircut here with Katie and she did an amazing job! This is the best haircut I have ever had. Katie took the time to explain how I should treat my hair starting from when I step into the shower to when I am done. As I was getting ready to check out she noticed a stray curl and came and clipped it. I live in the other side of Houston and it took me nearly an hour to get to Planet Curls but it was well worth every minute. I will be coming back!
I write this review with a heavy heart because I had such high hopes for this salon, and the staff is really nice, but I will not return. I booked an appointment with Gerri to have my natural hair straightened (listed as a "blow dry" on their website). I should have known things weren't going to go well when she asked why I want to straighten my hair and another stylist said he couldn't wait to see her do it because she never straightens hair. She clarified my hair twice and used a wash out conditioner (no deep conditioning was suggested, even though my hair was going to be straightened). I asked if I would be able to get my ends trimmed and she asked, "Did you add that to your service?" I told her that I had booked online and didn't notice the option to add more than one service, to which she responded by telling me what to click to add another service; she would not have time to trim my hair today. I was immediately disappointed because I knew what my straight hair would look like without it, but I was ready to get on with it at that point, so I said okay. She talked to me about products that would work for my hair type, but I told her it's not about hair type- it's about hair properties, and she agreed. Later she started talking to me about hair type again... I started wondering why I was still here, but I had driven across town for this appointment, so I wanted to see it through. I should have known better. We got up from the shampoo bowl and I realized that she had not thoroughly washed the hair on the back of my head. I ran my fingernails along my scalp and saw product buildup, so I told her that my hair wasn't completely clean. She said, "Really?" in disbelief and proceeded to then go through my hair quickly with her hands to see if she noticed any residue. I showed her what was under my nails and she sighed then said, "Okay, let's go back to the bowl." She washed the back of my hair, but did not condition it. insert angry face here We got to her chair and she started to spray heat protectant and something else into my hair while the other stylists brought her tools to work with. She then asked the receptionist, "How much time so I have to do this?" Her word choice was less than stellar in that moment. Her next appointment was in 30 minutes. I asked her if she had time to blow dry and straighten my hair and she said, "Not really, I don't. I can do it, but it would be rushed and wouldn't last long." I told her not to worry about it because I wasn't going to pay for half-ass work. We went BACK to the shampoo bowl to wash my hair again (since she had sprayed heat protectant in it) and then she put a conditioner on it and began to finger detangle. Her next appointment arrived and I could tell that she was ready to move on. She called two of the stylists to help her detangle my hair, but she left to go begin on her other client when the client appeared at the door to the shampoo room. She came back a few minutes later and started detangling my hair again, but she was so rough that one of the other stylists asked if I was okay. Gerri asked, "Is someone pulling? Is it me?" insert another angry face here The conditioner they were using was not working and my hair was getting more and more tangled. I could hear my hair being ripped apart. They would have kept yanking and ripping if I had not said, "The conditioner is not working." I swear, Gerri, the owner of the salon, the curly hair specialist, asked the other stylists what they should use. I was through with her at that point, so I was glad when she walked away again. I told the other stylists that my hair had been clarified and not deep conditioned, hence the tangles. Then to top it off she tried to charge me extra for the extra strangling time and deep conditioner that they ended up using as a styled! Wait.. what?!?! You want to charge me extra because you didn't have time to do what I came for and what you ended up doing cost more? She still overcharged me and assumed I didn't know, but I didn't feel like fighting about $10 (she thought I didn't know the service I received should have only cost $35 and what I went for was $40). At the end of it all, I did enjoy talking to Andrew as he finished the detangle and curlisto styled my hair, but this is not the place for my hair to be properly taken care of.UPDATE: I just got home and got a good look at my hair. It looks like I did it myself except for the white gunk that I was assured would disappear once my hair dried. Unfortunately, it did not, so I have to wash hair. The product used is just sitting on my hair.... white gunk.... I know they had to have seen it! This is the worst $45 I have spent in a long time.
Gerri is most awesome! Everyone who works there is super nice and very knowledgeable about curly hair! She cuts my whole family's hair- me, my husband, my two daughters ages 10 and 7, and my son's age 3. The. Best. Ever!!!
FANTASTIC! I went with so many concerns with the thought of cutting my hair and their choice of products but my experience was nothing short of great. Gerri took her time with me. She explained every detail of my olaplex treatment, cut, and style. I left smiling and confident with my new look. Not to mention the coffee was delish! I'm already looking forward to going back :))
I enjoyed the experience. I appreciated how Katie asked exactly what I wanted not just assumed what I needed, she also explained how to wash and style my hair. I usually don't like paying too much for my hair cuts but I will definitely do this again.
I don't have extremely curly hair but I have frizzy, heavy, and unruly hair and I have never been able to style my hair in a curly way very well it just looks frizzy and sticky and after leaving today I don't think I'll ever want to straighten my hair again it feels light and smooth and not sticky at all (which is amazing because it seemed like they put so much product on it). Everyone was extremely nice and made sure I understood how to style my hair, the only thing I have to complain about is that it would of been nice to have been helped pick out which products they used and which ones I should get when checking out but I just got a starter kit so it wasn't that big of a deal but definitely enjoyed the experience!!
I came to this appointment so optimistic. I had tons of photos illustrating what I wanted, and I was sure that a DevaCurl salon was going to deliver. Charlie didn't spend much time looking at my photos, and my cut... came out kind of Peppermint Patty-looking. A lot of weight low down, no layers. Not what I wanted at all. I was dried under a hood, and some combination of cut, product, and drying process left my hair exceptionally straight. Feeling pretty low about the whole experience.
I DEFINITELY loved the service I received here! Macy gave me an amazing cut and I can't remember he name, but the lady that co-washed my hair and styled it was very good with my hair and teaching me how to manage it on my own. I AM DEFINITELY coming back and recommending this place to everyone.
Let me start by saying I am almost 30 years old and have never walked out of a salon happy with the way my hair was styled. They've always brushed out the curl and left me with a complete frizz ball, so I was quite happy that they washed and styled my hair via the curly girl method. I went for color, no cut, and had Gerri. I had read great reviews on her so I gave it a try. She was very sweet, but honestly, I'm not sure I would schedule an appointment with her again. I drove over an hour to get to the salon and arrived about 30 minutes early because I was trying to account for traffic. I can totally understand having to wait for my appointment time, but I waited almost an hour from my scheduled appointment time. And she never came over to introduce herself or apologize for running behind. Nothing. The receptionist actually put me in her chair (while the precious client's hair was still scattered all over the chair and floor). What's worse is she actually wasn't even done with her previous client so when they came back to her chair she had to sit him in the next chair over to finish. She never asked me my name, never introduced herself to me, just grabbed my hair and asked what we were doing. It was actually awkward and pretty unprofessional. During my appointment she continually interrupted me to speak to others and between coloring steps I had to wait almost 30-40 minutes while she helped other clients. What could have been an hour to hour and half appointment took almost three hours. I understand stacking appointments but after already waiting an hour myself to even get started, it was pretty frustrating. To be honest, I didn't feel like I was important to them as a client. As much as I liked finally walking out of a salon with gorgeous curls, I don't know if it's worth going back to this salon.
Love my cut!! Went from long curly locks to a shorter shoulder length and I couldn't be happier! Charlie did a phenomenal job and explained to me how to to style my specific hair type and length and which products to use. He even helped me decide which cut would look best with my hair type, thankfully, because I walked in clueless as to what I wanted. Had a great experience would definitely recommend planet curls %100! Thanks again Charlie!!
Great place to go if you really want to learn how to take care of your luscious locks. They really know how to take care of textured hair. Ask the questions because they have the answers. They're a bit more expensive that the traditional salons, but honestly, curly hair does not need to be cut as often as straight hair. I only go twice a year, so I'm cool with the cost. That's not to say that I would not appreciate it being less expensive, but oh well.I would comment that there was some confusion and they were understaffed. First, when I made my appointment, I made it for me and one of my friends who has never had a specialty cut on her curly hair. I was supposed to be with Gerri, the owner, and my friend was supposed to be with Macey. I did this so that we would not be waiting there on each other. Well, I got Macey and I had to tell Macey that my friend was there and that I was supposed to be with Gerri. My friend wound up getting Gerri, which was fine, but when we made the appointment, no one bothered to tell me that Gerri was $20 higher than the other stylists. I had originally asked to be booked with Stephanie and she is no longer there, so I was to get a 50% discount.When it came time to pay, I had to show them an email for them to honor the discount. First off, they offered this to me over the phone and even sent me an email to let me know. Second, when I mentioned it at the time of checkout, I was told that I had to show them the email. I had to go to my car to get my phone to show the email, but I felt this was a ridiculous thing. They should have just had better customer service and honored the discount. Why should I have to show them an email? They are the ones who mentioned it to me and how would I even know about it if they didn't tell me. And I tried to book both of us with Stephanie. I know my friend was not a repeat customer, but she should have gotten the same discount. As it is, they did give her the same price as the other stylists (which they should have done in the first place because she was originally booked with Macie, not me).At any rate, I don't feel that my friend was taught about how to take care of her locks. Stephanie really took the time to teach me about how to style, wash, and pamper my locks. I feel like my friend did not get the same type of coaching as me. She should have been talked to about the steps and been given the book to read, talked to about the products used, etcetera. All in all, I was disappointed in the way the service was handled for my first-time friend that will probably not go back because of her lack of training by them. On the other hand, I feel like Macey when above and beyond to give me a great cut and to style my hair. She used different products because I have tangling issues and she also got Gerri to show her how to cut some bulk out of my hair (I have so much hair).All in all, a great place as long as you ask some questions and are not rushed through the experience. Time should be taken with all of the customers and everyone that comes through there should be taught about their locks.
Was the first appt. of the day for Charlie. He did not show up for an hour. After the long wait, I was rushed through, since his next appt. had arrived. Nothing I was told to expect happened. No explanation of how to care for hair, what products to use....nothing. Will only return if I can get a different stylist. Very disappointed after my hour drive to get there.
Katie was my hair stylist. She was incredibly knowledgeable and gave me a great hair cut. I've had many bad experiences at salons before so I was really nervous. But my hair has never ever ever looked this good I cannot wait Togo back! I'm very impressed and the salon is so cute and artsy. The staff is really nice and sweet. And I definitely stocked up on devacurl products. I can't stop looking in the mirror I love my hair so much now!!!
I've been to the DevaCut salons in Soho and Whiteplains for a few times when I lived there. I visited PlanetCurls a couple of times and while the staff is certainly knowledgeable, friendly, and care about my hair, I was disappointed by the process. It was not cut curl by curl but brushed instead. The conditioning came afterwards. Gave 3 stars because my cut and color were fine but the stylist didn't use DevaCut techniques I was used to.
This is the worst haircut experience I have had in my life. It almost brought me to tears in the chair at the salon. I asked for a shoulder length hair cut, and within minutes I knew he (Charlie) had cut way too much off. When I pointed this out, he had he audacity to assure me it was shoulder length. The hair now curls just below my ears!!! My face turned beet red in the chair, and I couldn't even watch in the mirror. I can't stand the way I look, and I'll have to bear it for a few months while I wait for it to grow a little lengthier. I really wish I put up a fight about it and didn't pay, but I was so upset I just honestly wanted to get out of there. He at least could have admitted he messed up and apologized. I highly encourage others to explore a different option.
I've had a number of terrible experiences when it comes to getting my hair cut, but after going to Planet Curls I'll never go anywhere else. Charlie paid careful attention to what I wanted my curls to look like and took his time to make it happen. He spent time explaining how to use the products and how to style my hair. Every time I go in now, I give him artistic freedom to cut and style my hair and have yet to be disappointed. The other thing he's done is color it. He's definitely an artist. He hand paints my curls to make them pop. After 24 years of having no idea what to do with my curls, I've fallen back in love with my hair thanks to Charlie.
I was a week away from getting a Brazilian Blowout because my curls just looked terrible all the time when I decided to try Planet Curls. The transformation in my hair was amazing-I love my curls again! Gerri is also a pro at Pintura highlights. Whenever people stop me to compliment my hair and ask where I go I don't hesitate to tell them that Gerri at Planet Curls is the best!
Gerri did a great job with my coils. I love the shape and the attention she gave to every single curl. My hair was uneven and shapeless and she brought it back to life!
I went to planet curls some time ago and had a bad experience. Charlie was my stylist and he was over 45 minutes late. He lopped my hair off with giant curved shears. My hair looked exactly as it did before but shorter. I was very disappointed.
Brought my daughter here for her haircut this summer. She had previously had her hair cut at Devachan in NY. The stylist/owner at planet curls just lopped off her hair. Did not cut curl by curl. My daughter was extremely disappointed. Not worth the price. I have had better haircuts at Greatclips.
I've been going to Stephanie at Planet Curls for a while now and she's never let me down. It makes all the difference in the world when you find a stylist who knows and loves curls rather than spends her time trying to convince you to straighten your hair.She's friendly, knowledgeable, really listens to what you want, and talks you through what she's doing. She's taught me how to take care of and style my curls and she's not a product pusher but she has introduced me to some products that have really worked for me.I get compliments on my hair all the time. I can't recommend her highly enough.
I've had my hair cut by a Deva stylist in thepast and she was great but just too far to drive to. I found Salon Planet Curls through this website and so glad I did. I had Stephanie and she was great! She showed me another way of styling my curls that I really liked, she was not pushy and she listened to what I wanted. She also gave me an alternative to the way I was coloring my hair that I like so much better, Plus a bit less expensive than my last girl which was a plus. I'm headed back in the next few weeks for another cut.
I had to straighten my hair for several days until I really had time to figure out what had been done to my hair and make a plan to make it presentable. Since my DevaCut, I've noticed my curls look...weird... I have a few small curl clusters that are WAY shorter than the rest of my hair, and they look almost stringy. As far as the experience goes, when I got to Planet Curls and told them my name and appointment info, I was told Charlie (my scheduled stylist) called in sick and tried to call me to either cancel or reschedule... Considering Planet Curls is a 70 mile drive from me, I can assure you that call never happened. My stylist was friendly enough, other than telling me it was "embarrassing" to have to shave some of the back of my neck for the bob haircut I wanted. A different girl washed my hair, and though I asked to see how much of all the products she used and how she used them, I did not get any instruction. Overall, my experience with Planet Curls was a waste of my time and my money.
Stephanie was my stylist. This is the first time I got a cut from a trained curly hair professional. I'm Chinese with 3A/Botecelli curls and ALL Asian salons, Visible Changes, local salons for the past 30+ years of my life would wash, blow dry straight, flat-iron straight, and cut. Or wash, comb through, cut, and use a diffuser.. I'd leave with my hair tied up. Stephanie did a dry cut, washed and explained to me during the wash how important the process and products were, and then did some touch-up snips. It was the first time EVER that I walked out with beautiful, bouncy, healthy looking curly hair. AND it lasted in Houston's humid weather. AND I had great looking hair the next day after I slept on it... I'm so used to tying it up in a bun or braiding my second day hair and I didn't have to do that! AWESOME. She's laid-back, didn't do much fake small talk, didn't push products, and I learned so much on how to take care of my hair. Thank you Stephanie!
