Looks Salon and Spa has been a family owned full service salon since 1999. We are a full service salon that offers a personal experience to all of our guests. Our two Deva advanced stylists Amanda and Andrea have trained in New York at the Devachan Academy and are here to help walk you through the Deva experience. With their years of experience, they understand that every curl is different. You will receive from them a personalized cut for your curl type, as well as, the knowledge and understanding of your hair so you are able to care for your curls at home.
I have genuine type 4 African American hair and was very nervous about having my hair done by someone with essentially straight hair. Well ladies. HAVE NO FEAR!! Andrea shaped my hair beautifully but more importantly, handled my 4a/b hair with ease and care. No tearing through tangles and ripping out hair. She respects your natural texture and is truly knowledgeable about our hair. Seriously!! She taught me things I didn’t know about my own hair! It was also a nice, commitment-free introduction to Deva Curl products. I’m sure I never would have tried them otherwise and it’s actually a really nice line. Having your hair cut dry is the way to go if you have coily or tight curly hair. A little shaping performed by a real pro makes all the difference in the world.
I came to the salon because I looked of the website and I saw these reviews above and thought I was making the right choice, but I was wrong. I came in on a rainy day to see Andrea and I hate my hair cut. My hair is uneven, it was dry after the product was put in it and it looks nothing like what I wanted. I think I’m more upset with myself, but this was just not the best experience and it will be my last time getting a deva cut. Im sure Andrea is a good stylist just not for me.
After hearing rave reviews, I recently had an appointment with Amanda Payne at Looks for a Devacut. My hair was getting long and I wanted to get it curlier. Amanda was not only extremely helpful and gave me so many good tips for enhancing my curls, but the cut itself was amazing. It was the exact length and curl definition I was looking for. Amanda helped me understand which products work best for my hair and why. She clearly understands how curly hair works and is very knowledgeable. I have decided that I will get my hair cut by her until she retires!
Well the rumors are true: AMANDA PAYNE IS A GENIUS. My curls were on death's door when I made my appointment with her. I chose her as a stylist based on all of these reviews. I was cautiously optimistic because only one stylist has ever been able to "get it right" with my hair. I had to wait a little bit for my appointment (she's in very high demand) but it was sooooooo worth it. She is outstanding and incredibly talented at her craft (and cutting curly hair is exactly that - her craft). During my appointment, she asked me if I liked my hair the day after I washed it and I immediately said no. I have always had problems the day after washing. My curls will fall flat and my hair just looks frizzy and horrible. She told me she wanted to get me to a place where I liked my hair on the second day. I was thinking "dream on lady." Well she wasn't kidding. Seriously. I LOVE my haircut but not only that, my curls are still vibrant the day after washing. I don't quite understand it. How did she do that with just scissors???? But I'm serious. She breathed new life into my hair. This woman has the magic touch. She's my new stylist. Period.
I came in with very liitle hope or optimism for my curly hair goals, but Amanda turned that all around. I have 3B/3C hair and I'm mixed, so my multicultural textured curls generally throw people for a loop. Amanda didn't even flinch. I could tell that she was an expert in her craft and she knew exactly what to do. My cut came out beautifully and my wash and go curls are still poppin on day 4!!! I'm hoping I can recreate this wash and go magic on my own. Amanda offered to answer any questions I have via email and I left feeling supported and confident that I can have beautiful curly hair.
I just had another Devacut with Andrea. I don't live or work close to this salon, so I haven't been able to get back as regularly as I should, but every time I go back, it reminds me why I need to make the time to keep coming here. Andrea is a master at her craft and I walk out of there knowing that I can easily recreate the style that I leave with.
Amanda Payne is one of the best stylists I've ever been to. She is extremely talented, professional and passionate about her craft. She is a star (expect to wait a few weeks for an appointment) without the star attitude. I have very thick, tightly coiled African-American hair and not only is Amanda beyond competent to handle this type of hair, she celebrates it. This is why I love going to her:-She values her customer's time and manages her's well, all while being extremely in demand. -She is so passionate and knowledgeable about curly hair that I truly believe there is no texture she can't do. She guided me on how to properly take care of my hair from products to technique to tools to treatments...you name it. I had a lot of questions and she didn't miss a beat. -She values excellence. Good enough is not good enough for Amanda. She really takes her time with her Deva cuts and suits them to a client's curl pattern, facial features and head shape. Her cuts don't just look good day of. They are well constructed, lay well and grow out beautifully.-She is open to direction but she doesn't need much of it. I am PICKY and I can tell her "do what you think is best" with complete confidence that she knows what she is doing.-I am tender headed and she can detangle and style my thick hair pretty painlessly. -When you are in her chair she is focused and present. She responds amazingly quickly to questions. You can tell she really cares about her clients because she goes above and beyond. -She is thoughtful in the way she speaks about natural hair. Amanda understands that a lot of clients come to her with negative experiences. I've been to way too many stylists (even salon owners!) that have subtly or overtly treated my hair as something difficult, foreign or less desirable. It's a horrible feeling way too many curly girls can relate to. Amanda is patient and I have never felt self conscious about my hair in her chair. I have also never felt self-conscious walking around the salon. I've come in with my hair looking tangled and Crazy and no one from the receptionists to the other stylists bats an eye. This is how it should be. -Some stylists are more skilled with short or long hair, feminine or more edgy styles. Amanda can do it all. There are so many good things to say about Amanda. She is a truly rare and exceptional stylist.
Very pleased with my Deva Cut & Style by Amanda Payne. I have long, super curly hair and was very nervous to arrive with my hair in a wash & go style, sans product on a hot, humid day. Amanda trimmed my curls, explained product use/technique, and had my curls popping! The biggest compliment came from my husband & teenage son, who loved how my hair looked and said, "you need to wear your hair out like that more often!" Already scheduled my next appointment with Amanda.
I had an amazing experience at Looks Salon & Spa! It began with a tour of the pristine facility and ended with a FABULOUS haircut! Amanda Payne is an expert in her field. She dedicated time before, during, and after my appointment to give me a customized consultation. She gave me tips (that work) to maintain my curls. Amanda truly cares about the health of hair and her skill, passion and enthusiasm is evident. I'm as pleased as punch with the results of my Devacut and have received numerous compliments from friends and strangers. Needless to say, I booked my next appointment as soon as I left her chair :) !
I started going to Amanda after my first Devacut experience at Diaspora Salon left me devastated. Review https://www.yelp.com/biz/diaspora-salon-baltimore?hrid=tqCmNBoNZtaHO37-e06i7AAmanda has been AMAZING to work with. At my first visit she spent at least 10 minutes really trying to understand what my goals were, my experience with wearing my hair natural and tried to help me build a plan to get to where I wanted to be. Since that original visit I've been back several times for 3 additional trims, and a few color treatments. Being an African American woman, I was initially unsure if Amanda would be the right person to manage my curls, but let me tell you she is heaven sent. I try to replicate my curls at home after leaving Amanda, but I am never able to get it to look the way she does. I'm convinced she has pixie dust in her shampoo bottles. If you want an awesome curly cut, go to Amanda.
Today I received my first deva cut with Andrea and she's amazing. I was nervous and anxious at first but she made sure I was well taken care of and took her time with my curls!! I will definitely be returning!!
Andrea is amazing!! She's very down to earth and understood what I was looking for and gave me exactly what I needed. I was nervous at first but she shook those nerves off and made me a returning customer!
I have been seeing Amanda Payne for over a year now. She is very talented as a Deva Cut stylist, and especially for my 3c/4a textured hair. She has taken her time to really explain how to take care of my curls, and listened to my concerns about my hair. Having multi-textured hair is a challenge, she has has been able to keep my hair even with regular trims and cuts while maintaining length. She also is great with color on my curls. So refreshing to find a talented and very skilled deva curl stylist that 'knows her stuff'!!!
I love my Deva cut! Andrea was so knowledgeable, pleasant and friendly. She did my hair exactly as I wanted. She even corrected some issue from a previous bad cut. Highly recommended!
Honestly, I have never liked my curly (more like poofy, frizzy) hair. For 40 years, I have NEVER gotten a haircut I liked (when my was curly). And for 40 years, I always wore my hair in a bun, or ponytail. Finally, 6 years ago I started to straighten my hair chemically. It was great, but expensive, and taking a toll on my hair. Last summer was the last time I got it straighten. I decided to go natural again and got a haircut from my regular stylist. I had to get the straight parts of my hair cut out. The haircut looked horrible! I had recently heard of DevaCurl through a friend of mine so I decided to give it a try. I found Amanda Payne on this website and booked an appt with her. It took 2 months just to get it, but it was WORTH IT!! 2 weeks before my appt, she sent me an email getting to know my hair routine and what I was looking for in a haircut. As soon as I walked in, she knew EXACTLY what to do. She taught me curlyhair 101...things I had NO IDEA about my curly hair. It was awesome! I walked out of Looks Salon with an amazing hair style and could not be happier!! I've received so many compliments. For the first time in my life: I LOVE my natural hair!!!! Thank you so much DevaCurl for putting in the research! Thank you, Amanda for such an amazing haircut!
I had an amazing experience with Andrea Edwards. It was my first Deva consult/cut and I think I've found my new stylist! I just started styling my hair curly about a month ago, after years of drying it straight, so I'm glad I to have her in my corner to help me figure out the cut, the products and the styling. I feel like I've leveled up my hair game.
I've been seeing Amanda Payne a good 6 years and counting. I now travel 45 miles just to see her for my cuts. She is professional and very talented with curly hair. Her expertise is unmatched to other deva or curly stylists I've seen. I always end up coming back. She listens to what I want but I also trust her when she wants to try something new. Worth the drive. Worth the $$. And her worth is just invaluable. Give her a try. You won't be disappointed.
So, I had my first appointment and Deva Cut experience with Andrea! She was extremely professional, warm and accommodating. I was very concerned with whether or not Andrea had logged enough hours with cutting African American coily-curly hair. She really did a great job and she took her time to really try to engage me and make me feel welcome as a new client. I loved my cut! The only thing I would recommend is to ensure that Andrea uses an adequate amount of product so that you can get those curls to pop after sitting under the dryer. She has the technique, but was a little light handed on the products - which caused the end result to to look a little fuzzy opposed to curly/defined. I know exactly how much and specifically which deva curl products I need on my hair to achieve my defined curls - so ladies if you know what it takes don't be afraid to let her know. You two can work together and work magic! I would highly recommend Andrea. She's a sweetheart!
I've been going to Andrea Edwards for over a year now, and working with her and the Deva product line has been such a positive experience! Looks Salon is kind of a hike for me to get to (I live in Baltimore city) but it is worth the drive to see Andrea. She has been so helpful with identifying my curl pattern, making recommendations on how to best style my hair and figuring out which Deva products will work for me. I also got my hair colored for the first time with her last fall. She did a balayage technique that added a lot of depth to my curls, and it looks great...even months later! Andrea is personable, knowledgeable, and overall a wonderful stylist. After years of going to professionals who had no idea how to work with my curls, it's awesome to finally have someone who knows what she's doing :)
I went to see Amanda Payne for my DevaCut at Looks Salon and Spa. I wanted a DevaCut because my hair was so shapeless for my wash and goes. Like most curly girls, I have multiple Curl patterns on my head. My curl pattern ranges from 3c-4b. Amanda listened to how I wanted my hair to fall and look. When she finished my cut, I was in awe of how awesome my cut looked. Before I left the shop, I booked my next appointment, that should tell you how much I love it. I've gotten so many compliments on my hair within the past 2 days since my haircut. Thanks so much Amanda!
Today, I went to Andrea Edwards for a Devacut and I was completely happy with my results! I saw this type of cut online and thought it was worth a try, and I am very happy with the service that Andrea provided. She was very knowledgeable about how to care for kinky/curly hair and she took the time to teach me techniques for maintaining my hair. I am definitely returning!
I have been to Amanda P. 4 times now and she is amazing. She is very knowledgeable on curly hair and how to keep it healthy. She has colored my hair three times and sat down with me every to review what I wanted to explain processes and potential outcomes. As a side note, the salon is also clean and well maintained with friendly staff. I defiantly recommend getting your hair down there.
I used the online booking service to request an appointment at Looks. This is the email reply I received "Hi Emily, we do have two stylists here who offer the deva cut. Unfortunately we are not sure what you mean by the pintura highlights. Please let me know how you would like to proceed. Thanks.-JordanLooks Salon and Spa410-381-9030www.looksllc.com" Right next to the stylists' name on this site it states at least one is trained in pintura highlights. I called the salon and when speaking with the receptionist (don't know if it was the same person) she also stated she didn't know what I was referring to. I did book an appointment with Amanda and have my hopes up due to the great reviews. I hope I am not making a mistake.
I am so happy to found Amanda! I have been going to her for about 18 months and love how my hair looks! I am an African-American woman with very curly/coily hair (3C/4A) and went to multiple black hair salons thinking they would work with my natural hair. Unfortunately, most wanted to change my natural curls instead of enhance them. They also didn't want to give me tips on how to maintain my hair. One stylist literally said that she was here to do my hair not to teach me how to take care of it. The last straw came when the stylist cut my hair as if I was wearing is straight instead of curly. Once I wore my hair curly, it looked awful and starting looking for another stylist. After researching DevaCurl products, I took the plunge to find a stylist. I was nervous at first. I never been to a non-ethinic salon before but Amanda quickly eased my concerns. Not only did she do an excellent job on my hair, she embraced my curls and made them shine. I have received so many complements on my hair!Since that moment, I have never looked back. I HIGHLY recommend women who wish to embrace their natural hair to go to Amanda!
Amanda Payne was my stylist and she did an amazing job. She was a great conversationalist and made me feel comfortable right away. She talked to me about my current regimen, what was working/not working for the health of my hair, and what look was I going for. I wanted to go short, so she gave me an awesome cut, definitely sold me on the DevaCurl products. She only used four products total. After I was serviced my curls were POPPING to say the least. I am in the military stationed in Fl but will be traveling to see Amanda around every 6 months. I don't wan't to see anyone else, the woman's a genius!
In one hour Amanda total transformed my hair. I am amazed. I am a wavy/swavy girl who has been following the curly girl method since September. Every day has been a chemistry experiment to try and maximize wave and curls. I have not had much luck with second day hair. Amanda gave me a Deva cut, then styled my hair with 3 products - ONLY 3! She taught me how to properly clip and set myself up for great curls. The results were amazing. Today I am enjoying the best second day hair I have ever had. I am looking forward to trying for 3rd day hair tomorrow. I cannot stress how much difference the cut make in my hair shape and releasing my curl pattern. Wow. Plus, Amanda told me I should only return every 3 months for a cut. I already have my next appointment booked. If you are wavy, curly or kinky - get yourself to a Deva stylist right now. Seriously. If you live in central Maryland - see Amanda.
I highly recommend Amanda as a hair stylist and colorist! I have very curly hair and she gave me a Deva cut. She totally reshaped my hair while leaving it long, exactly what I was looking for! Amanda explained what she was doing throughout the process and even emailed me with directions as to how to care for my hair at home. I can honestly say this is the best haircut and highlight I've ever had!!
